The
Public Safety Writers Association (PSWA)
is under new management and is being re-organized in Bellingham,
Washington. Following many years of successful membership growth, the PSWA
has embarked upon an ambitious plan to expand services and training and
seek non-profit status.
Founded by retired New York State Police Captain
Roger Fulton, as the Police Writers Club in 1994, to nurture aspiring
writers, the group has expanded from its initial East Coast orientation
into a nationwide organization. Its mission is to provide resources and
services to police writers aspiring to become published authors. Under
its re-organization plans, the PSWA will expand its membership to other
public safety professionals (sworn and civilian) including fire, emergency
medical, search and rescue and related fields.
Marilyn Olsen of Bellingham,
Washington, who edited a magazine for the Indiana State Police Alliance
for 15 years and co-edited Cop Tales 2000, is serving as President
(replacing founding member Roger Fulton who will continue to advise the
new group); San Francisco, California resident Armand E.R. Mulder, Ph.D.,
is Vice President; Monterey County, California residents Arthur J. and
Nancy B. Farrar are serving as Secretary and Treasurer. Other board
members are Las Vegas, Nevada residents Randy Sutton and Keith Bettinger
and Springville, California resident Marilyn Meredith.
Following the events of
September 11th, 2001, police and public safety writers have
been contributing their unique perspectives to major publications
throughout the country. The PWA was formed to nurture and encourage these
aspiring writers. Membership is open to anyone who works with or for
public safety organizations at the local, regional, state or national
level.
Benefits of membership will
include: (1) an annual writing competition, (2) a quarterly newsletter
full of tips on writing and how to get published, (3) annual conference
where you can meet and network with published authors and receive
information on getting published, (4) free manuscript review by
experienced editors and publishers, (5) opportunity to be mentored by a
published author, (6) opportunity to network with writers like yourself
via our website and list serve.
A major national capital
campaign is planned to market the organization to prospective members and
to solicit donations of supplies, equipment and funding for existing and
aspiring writers.
